Community driven design

Fort St. John is called the ‘energetic’ city for a reason, and the design for Centennial Park reflects this community energy with cutting-edge design. Centennial Park is Fort St. John’s premier downtown park, and a gathering place for the City’s largest annual events: Canada Day, Santa Clause Parade and the High on Ice Winterfest. During summer and autumn, it hosts Canada Day celebrations and is the location for Movies in the Park. The adjacent Fort St. John Museum is an anchor of history and culture and has been integrated into the parks master plan.

IBI Group is providing the City of Fort St. John with an integrated design approach for this exciting project. With cross-disciplinary experts involved from across the firm since project inception, the core design team is based in IBI’s Calgary office. IBI completed the stakeholder engagement and master planning phases of the project in 2017 and is currently supervising the construction with completion scheduled for August, 2020.

We worked with the City of Fort St. John and local therapists in selecting the most appropriate inclusive play equipment for the new playground. Key design elements include:

  • New amenities including two new play areas – one for inclusive play and the other a parkour playground for older children
  • Enhanced park lighting
  • Improvements to existing park infrastructure

The design also incorporates an entrance plaza from 100th street, a permanent events stage/band shell, a formal garden, and additional pathways for better connectivity. Embracing the importance of Fort St. John being a winter city, IBI’s lighting design concept around the park and within the bandshell’s ceiling and screen, confirms the importance of creating colourful, vibrant and safe lighting within the public realm, especially in a northern Canadian city.
